How Claude pitch decks are losing you investors

There is no question that Claude is an excellent starting point for founders to plan their investor pitch and quickly build an initial draft in PowerPoint.

But some founders today make the cardinal mistake of simply tweaking raw PPT generated by Claude, and sending that to investors.

For many VCs, this is grounds for an instant rejection.

Claude is an absolute scourge on pitch decks - Jay Kapoor, Partner @ VSC Ventures

The problem is not (just) design. With the right prompts, you can get Claude to (relatively) match your company’s branding.

Founders tend to defensively interpret this as VCs demanding prettier slides, but it has nothing to do with ‘taste’ and aesthetics; the problem is the message.

The signal a Claude pitch deck sends investors is “I spent less time making this than you will reading it.”

VCs read literal hundreds of decks with Claude’s unmistakable design and writing style. In the last week alone, they probably saw 15+ decks with headings featuring Claude-isms like:

  • “Three functions. Four stakeholders. One platform.”
  • “Genuinely unique…”
  • “We’re not X. We’re Y”

That doesn’t just undermine one message. It ruins the ethos of the whole pitch. (See what we did there?😉)

The whole point of a pitch deck is to stand out from the crowd.

When a fund decides to back your startup, a partner must first create their own memo about your company to persuade the other the GPs. That memo is built almost entirely from your deck.

The ideal pitch deck should directly provide the language and ammunition to sell you when you’re not in the room.

If your deck is a color-swapped clone of the 100 others in their inbox, the partner has nothing sharp to pull from. They also have to worry whether the market data or sources in your deck were hallucinated.

Effectively, a Claude deck is asking the VC to do extra homework: to formulate taglines and data for your company, or to compromise and recycle the Claude-generated content.

A forgettable memo is surefire “pass” in the partner meeting.

How top startup founders are using Claude for their decks:

In our own pitch deck consulting practice, we get to work every month with founders backed by some of the top accelerators (ie. YC, Techstars) and investors (ie. Khosla Ventures, Tiger Global) in the nation.

Almost all of them do create a rough “outline” version of their pitch deck with Claude for planning purposes.

However, none of them send the raw Claude output to investors.

In our experience, every successful founder choose to recreate the pitch from scratch (either with an internal designer or an external consultant), redoing the design, storytelling, and copywriting.

Whether you hire an agency or freelancer, use a presentation template, or just tweak the slides yourself, your pitch will make a much stronger first impression on investors.
