Shopify has come far since its inception in 2004, when it was just a small online store selling snowboards. The company was founded in 2006 by Tobias Lütke, Daniel Weinand, and Scott Lake, but actually began in 2004 when the three friends, who were all passionate about snowboarding, started an online store called Snowdevil.

Today, Shopify powers over 1.7 million businesses in more than 175 countries, ranging from startups to global brands like Gymshark, Allbirds, and Heinz. Shopify rebranded to “the entrepreneurship company” recently, but supporting entrepreneurs has been in their DNA since the start.

According to the 2016 pitch deck, Shopify’s GMV for the entire year of 2014 (the year before it went public) was $300M less than the volume sold on Shopify during Black Friday, less than ten years later. 🤯

Watchful eyes estimate that Shopify accounted for 20 – 30% of Stripe’s volume on Black Friday.
