After growing a massive audience of 12.1M subscribers on YouTube with candid, fast-cut vlogs, Emma Chamberlain has been broadening her footprint with a hit podcast, high-profile fashion partnerships, and regular appearances at major industry events.

In 2020, she launched Chamberlain Coffee to turn her long-time iced-coffee obsession into something she could share on her own terms—fun, approachable, and aligned with her values. Emma saw a gap between serious, intimidating coffee culture and what her audience actually wanted: high-quality beans that are easy to brew, ethically sourced, and packaged sustainably, with playful branding that doesn’t take itself too seriously.

“Coffee just became a part of my brand on the internet, and I wanted to turn that into something bigger. Chamberlain Coffee feels like an extension of myself, and getting to work on something that I feel so connected to has been so rewarding,” said Emma.

Initially released as an online store, Chamberlain Coffee sold everything from coffee blends and matcha to mugs, whisks, and even t-shirts. What began as an online business has since grown into a national retailer, with products now available on the shelves of Whole Foods Market, Walmart, Target, Albertsons, Costco, and Sprouts Farmers Market. 

The brand has also established partnerships with Pinterest, Dove, 818 Tequila, Blank Street Coffee, and Erewhon.

However, the venture has hit some bumps in recent years. In 2024, it faced stocking problems at stores because of supplier issues. The brand also faced significant trouble securing funding after operating at a loss in 2024, despite clearing nearly $22 million in revenue. Adding insult to injury, Chamberlain Coffee was unceremoniously bounced from the first round of the Sprudge 2025 Ultimate Coffee Bracket.

Now, the company is re-focusing on “profitability over growth” which means scaling back retail presence, streamlining product inventory, and focusing on more brick-and-mortar cafes.

“We have four more cafe locations in the works, with a large publicly traded company as our financial partner,” states a Chamberlain Coffee representative. With these changes, the brand forecasts a 53% revenue growth in 2025, to $33 million, which will put the company back in the black.

1. Audience Slide

Defining the audience is the foundation of building a successful startup. Without understanding the audience, it is very easy to ship a solution that doesn’t solve real problems or connect with those who need it. Successful entrepreneurs focus on creating value for their customers. It’s not about building something flashy; it’s about making something that truly matters to people. However, knowing the audience is more than just figuring out the demographics; it’s about understanding behaviors, needs, and the problems they face.

Chamberlain Coffee’s audience slide makes a solid case that they’ve locked in on Gen Z and understand what that crowd cares about. More importantly, they back it up with traction—hard numbers instead of guesses. If you can show traction, you’re showing you’ve figured out what people want.

The slide design is built on strong foundations and tells a clear story at a glance. A different colour for Chamberlain instantly pops against the competitor set, and splitting the narrative into three comparable groupings (awareness, conversion, engagement) is a smart and easy-to-scan structure.

However, the slide can feel overwhelming at first glance as there are too many elements fighting for attention, especially the oversized “Survey commissioned by UTA IQ” pill. The slide can benefit from a cleaner design as well as key takeaways above each panel (e.g., “#2 in awareness,” “#1 in conversion”, #1 in social engagement”) to land the insight fast.

2. Product Improvement Slide

VCs are well aware of the fact that the product founders are pitching will evolve and possibly change completely. This is the dynamic and unpredictable nature of consumer behaviour. This is why investors like to see from the best entrepreneurs that they understand their main risks, keep an eye on them, and are thinking of ways of mitigating them.

If you can show investors that you have a grip on the market and the challenges that are coming your way, you can instill a lot of confidence in your abilities as a business leader. Remember, if you don’t articulate the challenges you face clearly, investors will try to come up with them on their own. This approach allows you to control the narrative and lead investors down the path you want them to follow.

This kind of content isn’t typical in a pitch deck, but if it’s concise and easy to scan, it leaves a strong impression. For example, Chamberlain Coffee explains in the product improvement slide that after a slowdown in growth in 2024, it was learning to match the right products with retailers, improving its distribution by working with high-capacity suppliers, and moving toward profitability by improving its product formulations.

The slide has a grid design with a grid-based composition. This layout combines with high-contrast navy and white typography to ensure clear legibility. Additionally, the photos are related to each theme: assortment for retail, a major retail partner for supply chain reach, and RTD cans for margins. However, the copy would benefit from being more metric-driven by replacing soft claims (e.g. we are / we have) with crisp results that quantify impact (e.g. reduced COGS 9% YoY through supplier consolidation).

3. Exit Slide

The structure of venture capital makes the startup game a race. VCs have to beat competitors’ funds because whoever has the highest returns can raise their next, bigger fund. They also have to beat the returns from public markets; otherwise, their investors are better off putting their money into traditional markets, and as we know, over a large enough period of time, the market keeps going up relentlessly.

As such, VCs are looking for that needle in the haystack — the one startup that will generate a 100x return to make up for all their failures. As a founder, if you can show them a legitimate plan as to how you can grow revenues to $100M within a few years and get acquired for a billion, then you have a great chance of securing funding.

Being legitimate is the key here because hand-waving about a future acquisition without a concrete strategy is a red flag. Chamberlain Coffee’s pitch deck’s exit plan slide avoids those red flags by citing precedent transactions in the category and, more importantly, signalling interest from likely strategic acquirers.

On the design side, the slide’s repeating card structure builds pattern recognition, making the comps easy to compare at a glance. Using well-known logos for both targets and acquirers creates instant credibility and saves reading time. However, there are still improvements that can be made; for example, the headline is long and wraps awkwardly, and should be split into a punchy title with a short subhead. Additionally, the typographic hierarchy and spacing jump around, and the small footnote text is low-contrast and undercuts the “already engaged” claim.
