Healthcare providers have to review patient charts to make decisions about patient care and select the right medical codes for billing. However, manual chart reviews can be time-consuming, potentially reducing the amount of time providers can spend with their patients and driving up costs.
Charta Health is an AI-powered platform that optimizes medical billing and coding workflows. By performing pre-bill reviews on every chart, Charta Health identifies missed coding opportunities, prevents claim denials, and ensures compliance with billing standards.
“Healthcare’s reimbursement process relies on manual labor, making it less than optimal. Founders Justin Liu and Scott Morris, former engineers at Rockset (acquired by OpenAI), recognized that healthcare was one of the industries most primed for AI adoption. They spent a year earning Certified Professional Coder certifications; immersing themselves in medical coding while conducting more than 100 interviews with healthcare leaders to pinpoint the sector’s most pressing challenges.
“Justin and Scott combine deep, technical expertise and first-principles thinking to solve the critical issue of manual chart review,” said Aaref Hilaly, partner at Bain Capital Ventures. “They didn’t just assume AI was the answer—they first immersed themselves in the industry to fully understand the complexities of billing and auditing.”
Charta began its outreach to potential clients through a series of cold emails. Within just 60 days of sending emails to potential clients, Charta secured $500,000 in revenue. This traction was so rapid that it pushed the startup into profitability before it even launched from stealth in June 2024.
“We didn’t realize just how big of an opportunity this was going to be,” Liu admitted.
This explosive growth led to an $8.1 million seed in February 2025. The round led by Bain Capital Ventures. SV Angel, South Park Commons, SpringRock Ventures, Refract Ventures, and strategic angel investors also contributed to the round.

1. Problem Slide
When pitching to investors, founders need to be ready to answer the big “why” questions: Why do clients need this product? Why does this matter? Why is it better than the current solution? If a founder can’t clearly explain the value to the user, they risk losing investor interest by failing to make a compelling case.
The problem slide exists to tackle these questions head-on. It should highlight a major issue that isn’t being addressed effectively and make it clear why solving it is worthwhile. Charta Health’s problem slide does a solid job of this—it breaks down inefficiencies in the medical chart review process and backs them up with data on market size and impact.
Impressively, it does all of that concisely and using a data-driven approach. That said, it could be even stronger with some visual elements, like a simple chart comparing 100% vs. 2%. The bolding could also be refined—focusing on key figures like “$85 billion” and “less than 2%” would make the slide easier to scan and absorb.
2. Opportunity Slide
Another very important ‘why’ question investors would like to understand is, “Why now?” — especially in the context of a company like Charta Health and the complexities of healthcare billing and regulation.
Investors wants to understand that “Why didn’t this happen five years ago?” or “Why can’t this be done five years from now?”. But in Charta Health’s case, the most obvious question that comes to mind is “if it’s [chart reviewing] so valuable, why aren’t more charts reviewed?” The Opportunity slide answers this perfectly with two simple but compelling reasons: it’s too time-consuming and too expensive. The deck then seamlessly transitions to solution slide to provide an overall picture.
The slide itself is well-crafted with minimalistic design and plenty of white space, making it easier to read. The text hierarchy is designed in such a way that the audience can quickly scan through the slide by reading the italics and bold text, or they can go deeper into the body text to understand the entire context. The numbering of paragraphs also helps break the information into digestible chunks.
3. Solution Slide
After laying out the problem and the opportunity, the deck delivers a killer solution slide—one that ties everything together seamlessly. It explains how the company is leveraging LLMs to automate reviewing of charts in a single sentence —a concise explanation that makes the concept instantly clear.
This is brilliant storytelling in action: the entire company distilled down into a very short paragraph. Yes, there’s more nuance and the product no doubt does more than that — but by boiling it right down, the deck makes the information very easy to digest.
One good thing about the solution slide is it avoids generic AI buzzwords. Instead of simply saying “we use AI,” it explains that the solution is now possible because of the rise of Large Language Models. Investors are aware of all the AI buzz and can conclude that Charta is utilizing these new breakthroughs in AI.
On the design side, the slide maintains the minimal and structured look. The geometric pattern at the bottom adds an aesthetic touch and prevents the slide from looking too plain. However, the entire body text is in bold, which can feel overwhelming. Instead, only key phrases like “fully autonomous pre-bill review” could’ve been in bold to improve readability.
