Significant privacy enhancements by Apple and Google have complicated the measurement and tracking of marketing campaigns in recent years. Mobile-marketing firm Tappa aims to assist brands in addressing these challenges by boosting traffic and engagement within mobile apps.

In a nutshell, Tappa is a human-centric mobile technology company that empowers individuals to express themselves and engage more deeply with the brands they love. Tappa promotes brands through various channels, with their primary promotional method being their owned and operated keyboard products.

“The branded keyboards use deep linking to drive people to specific parts of an app. Brands can create their own custom icons and images that appear on the keyboards when someone uses an app, which can help consumers remember the brand”, Leo Giel, CEO of Tappa said.

For example, a financial app might use a keyboard with a button to make a transfer or quickly find cash-back rewards.

“Tappa has partnered with some of the largest organizations globally to develop custom keyboard technologies for their fan base and followers to download and use on their mobile devices. This allows brands to promote their products to a unique user base in places they have never been able to reach before.” Giel said.

Tappa’s branded keyboards are opened half a million times each month. According to Giel, the platform’s total reach exceeds 500 million users, with clients including sports teams like Real Madrid and apps like Bottled and Benjamin.

The company also has a product that uses AI to scrape data from how people use the keyboards — like identifying other apps they use and what content they engage the most with — and packages it up for brands. According to Tappa, the data is collected in aggregate and is privacy-safe because it is not collected from individual users.

Tappa announced that it had raised $4.9 million in a seed round of funding led by Alicorn Venture Partners to expand its products and hire sales and tech talent. The startup plans to begin raising its Series A round early next year, he said.

Here are seven key slides from Tappa’s investor deck:

  1. Opportunity Slide
  2. Traction Slide
  3. Roadmap Slides

1. Opportunity Slide

Breaking into a market is tough for most startups. Often, the market is just too crowded with established companies, making it hard for new players to get a piece of the action. Or, the market might not even exist yet, without enough demand to create a new space.

But every once in a while, there’s a shift or an opening that gives a startup a chance to enter an existing market or create a new one. When you can show investors that you’ve found this opportunity and have a unique advantage over competitors, that’s when you’ve got a solid, fundable idea.

Tappa’s opportunity slide highlights a new opportunity by showcases how its innovative keyboard solution can help app publishers recover audiences lost due to Apple’s privacy changes while unlocking new revenue streams through advertising and search.

The slide design effectively demonstrates the opportunity at hand with a visually engaging Tappa keyboard image. However, to make the slide more impactful, the text could be more concise and focused on the key value propositions.

2. Traction Slide

Startup founders often lack extensive experience, and most startups have a limited financial history, making it challenging for venture capitalists to assess their financial performance and predict its course. To instill confidence in VCs and secure their investment, demonstrating traction is crucial.

Depending on your startup type and circumstances, traction can be showcased in various ways, including growth, customer acquisition cost, average revenue per year, user retention, marketing efficiency, and/or sales pipeline.

Tappa’s pitch deck traction slide emphasizes the reduction of customer acquisition costs and subsequent organic customer growth. The slide features an engaging and concise heading that informs investors about the key fundamentals of Tappa’s traction. The bar chart illustrating organic growth is straightforward and easy to interpret. These elements, combined with brief yet compelling explanations, create a powerful slide that effectively presents Tappa’s traction.

3. Roadmap Slides

At any fundraising stage (and especially during the seed stage), one piece of information that is crucial for investors is the breakdown of how founders plan to utilize their investment capital. Investors want to ensure that their funding will be used effectively to drive growth, achieve the startup’s goals, and support runway to the next round or liquidity event. An effective roadmap slide should include a detailed plan for the future, with fundable milestones that strike a balance between being setting realistic assumptions and ambitious growth targets.

Tappa’s roadmap slide outlines several key objectives that the founders consider essential for the company’s growth over the next 6-9 months. These objectives align with the principles of SMART goals, which are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound.

From a design perspective, Tappa’s slide has room for improvement (a timeline illustration could significantly improve readability), but the content is strong and demonstrates a well-planned roadmap for an early-stage startup pitch.
